St. Philip Students to Participate in Service Trip

On June 20, 2010, a group of 15 St. Philip High School students and five adult chaperones will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico for a weeklong service trip. HandsOn Battle Creek and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation have
sponsored the program.

The students have been meeting twice a month throughout the school year to plan the trip. The group began by choosing a location, selecting between Mississippi, New Orleans, and New Mexico. The students were responsible for researching issues affecting many New Mexico residents. After choosing poverty as the issue they wanted to address, they came up with a list of potential service projects they could do while in New Mexico.

The group will be working on Santo Domingo Pueblo, a Native American reservation north of Albuquerque, as well as helping out at a local charter school in Albuquerque. The projects chosen include building a new playground, doing various clean-up projects on the pueblo, and hosting a “block party” for the families they are helping.

Check out handsonservicetrip2010.blogspot.com for pictures and posts while the students are on their trip!

Expanding & Enhancing Our Sr. Internship Program

At St. Philip Catholic Central High School, student preparation and success is our overall goal. While we have some of the highest standardized test scores in the area, we continue to explore new ways to challenge and motivate students throughout high school. At St. Philip High School, we are very intentional about exposing our students to a wide range of experiences and opportunities to think about college and career goals. Over the past 18 months, we've worked with a Community Task Force to expand and enhance the Senior Internship Program. With the input of business and community leaders, parents and students, St. Philip's program is like no other in the area. To learn more about this exciting updated program, click here.

Katelyn Lewis (left), a 2008 graduate of St. Philip High School, successfully completed the Senior Internship Program with the Kellogg Company in the area of Corporate Fitness. She currently attends Olivet College and continues to work part-time for Kellogg Company as a Health Promotions Specialist. Katelyn credits her internship with helping her clarify her coursework for college as well as her future career interest. "It really was the best thing to happen to me my senior year."
